Student recycling project proving a success with support from Business Waste & Recycling Service.
Students across West Sussex are gaining valuable lessons in recycling thanks to a new initiative created by the West Sussex Waste Partnership, with waste collection support provided by the Business Waste & Recycling Service. This initiative aims to improve recycling habits among students aged 15-24 while educating staff and contractors on the importance of reducing waste.
The West Sussex Waste Partnership, which includes Chichester District Council and West Sussex County Council, designed the initiative in collaboration with the Chichester College Group. Campuses at Brinsbury, Chichester, Crawley, Haywards Heath, and Worthing have implemented various programmes such as clothes swaps, film nights, improved recycling collections, and educational waste prevention stalls.
To ensure the success of these programs, the Business Waste & Recycling Service has provided essential waste collection facilities, allowing for the efficient disposal and recycling of materials across all participating campuses.
Key achievements of the initiative, supported by the Business Waste & Recycling Service's collection systems, include:
- Separate food waste collections in canteens, coffee shops, and the Chichester College catering school, significantly reducing overall waste and boosting recycling efforts.
- Updated and standardised recycling information across all campuses to improve awareness.
- Installation of dedicated battery recycling points to make responsible disposal more accessible.
- Textile and small electrical item collections, coordinated by Chichester District Council at key times during the academic year, to encourage responsible waste disposal among students.
- Replacement of classroom bins with centralised recycling stations to encourage mindful waste sorting.
Jon Rollings, Chief Operating Officer for Chichester College Group, expressed the importance of this collaborative effort: "At Chichester College Group, we are committed to taking steps to reduce waste and increase recycling across all of our campuses. That's why we're working closely with the West Sussex Waste Partnership to help us look at ways we can increase our understanding of wase prevention and highlight how we can all do our bit for our environment - whether that's here at college or at home."
Mark Barlow, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer said "The University of Chichester is working with the West Sussex Waste Partnership to both reduce waste and increase recycling across our student and staff community. The University view this as a key goal of our sustainability strategy, and helping our students to understand what can be recycled is crucial to our joint success."
The Business Waste & Recycling Service has played a crucial role in providing the infrastructure needed for the project's success, supporting the West Sussex Waste Partnership's goal of fostering long-term sustainable habits across the region.
